Today the age-old principle of stewardship and tithing is receiving a renewed emphasis throughout the Body of Christ in ABCUSA. Even the media has written about church giving and its impact on society. There is significant work yet to be done to reinforce God’s Word and Works. This interactive seminar will present and discuss the subject Jesus talked about most through the FIVE Ts, The Roles of Clergy and Laity, and the Ten Lay Perceptions That Do Not Perpetuate Healthy Stewards of God’s Blessings. Dr. Molly Marshall refers to an ancient Benedictine practice, conversatio morum, which is the willingness to be “continuously converted in practical virtue,” or in Marshall’s words, “to be open to a new horizon.” One way to do this is by listening intently to God and to one another, entering into deep and dynamic dialogue. We invite you to join us, meet the ABWIM Advisory team and engage in critical conversations about God’s call as we seek to transform the landscape, moving to a new horizon where all God’s gifts and all God’s calls can be fully utilized and completely lived out. Dr. Debora Jackson, Executive Director, The Ministers Council Tuesday, 1:30pm-2:45pm (all) Thursday, 3:00pm-4:15pm (all) Are leaders who take time apart to engage in spiritual practices more effective in their leadership? The answer is yes, and this workshop will show attendees how. By traversing a process of 7Rs (Retreat, Release, Reconnect, Review, Reflect, Recalibrate, and Return), attendees will learn how to realize sanctuary–that mental and/or physical place in which resources are restored and spiritual well-being is increased. It is in that place of sanctuary that leadership effectiveness is fostered, because leaders will emerge with strategies that help them move faithfully forward. Thus, this workshop will provide a process for creating sanctuary and realizing effectiveness in leadership, while restoring spiritual well-being. W-13 ABPS: Partners in your Ministry, Partners in your Future Presented by: Rev. Dwight M. W-14 Regional Executive Ministers Council–Ministry Transitions: When to Stay and When to Go Presented by: Dr. Riley Walker, Former Executive Minister, ABC of the Dakotas Wednesday, 11:00am-12:15pm (MT) Thursday, 1:30pm-2:45pm (all) Most ministers move 4-8 times in their career, yet there are few resources to guide them through the Search and Call process. Walker has many years of experience in assisting ministers and churches in the Search and Call process. For churches, the Search and Call process has many similarities. This workshop will present the expectations and process used by churches to call ministers. Walker will identify four key elements that make up a transition in ministry. The first landmark is "When to Stay and When to Go." Because our ministry has a primarily spiritual context, we need to make the staying or going choice a spiritual decision, while viewing the realities of family well-being, financial needs and contextual compatibility. W-15 Leading Behind the Holy Spirit–A Practical Theology for Leading and Coaching a Ministry Team Presented by: Rev. Sandra A. Wimpelberg, Vice President of Development, Green Lake Conference Center/American Baptist Assembly Thursday, 11:00am-12:15pm (MT) Thursday, 3:00pm-4:15pm (all) The paradox in the title is what Rev. Wimpelberg experiences in the work of leading others. Coaching an individual or group of people to discern, move forward into action and achieve goals is, by it's very nature, proactive. As a leader and a coach, we have the opportunity to both hold space open for the Holy Spirit to work and keep the individual focused on getting to the goal. In many situations, it is easy to get caught up in getting to results. It is what is expected, right? The goal gets reached. The question might be: “Have you, or the people you lead, been changed by the process?” Do you have what it takes to be a leader who is so totally submitted to the power and purpose of the Holy Spirit, in yourself and in others, that you dare to "lead behind the Holy Spirit?" W-16 What Have I Walked Into? W-18 Leaders Who Last: Sustaining Yourself and Your Ministry Presented by: Margaret Marcuson, Faculty, Leadership in Ministry workshops Tuesday, 1:30pm-2:45pm (all) Thursday, 11:00am-12:15pm (MT) Is church leadership a recipe for burnout? How can leaders last? There’s a way to approach ministry that is sustainable: leaders can learn to focus on themselves and the resources they bring to their leadership rather than trying harder to help, fix or change others. This presentation will show how leaders can make a difference while sustaining themselves through the ups and downs of church life. It will help leaders become more thoughtful about the challenges they face and respond with more clarity, calm and creativity as they move forward together. When leaders know themselves, know their purpose and know their context, ministry can prosper. This presentation will enhance leaders’ understanding in these three key areas, making their work of leadership easier and more effective.
